[Even though she promised Steph she would, she hasn't been coming to her after bad dreams come. She'd been certain the girl had enough on her mind without being a worry. But the longer she stays here, the more comfortable she feels — and it's been nearly a year since everything that had happened last January. They've been getting worse lately.
Whatever the reason, it's a little past two in the morning when she wanders into her bedroom, walking in as silently as she can and nudging her, trying not to wake Saul.]
[She's awake as she hears someone moving through the house, though she waits rather than getting up, in case it's just Ahiru or Dick going for a drink of water or something. By the time she feels the nudge, she knows that's not the case, and she makes an effort to shake off any sleepiness.]
Hey, duckling.
[It's just a whisper, but she can guess why Ahiru is waking her, so she eases the covers back and climbs out of bed, putting a hand on the Ahiru's shoulder and giving her a gentle nudge back towards the living room where they can talk without worrying about waking Saul.]
[She's silent as she makes her way towards the living room, running a hand through her hair, tangle by turning over in her sleep a few too many times.
She doesn't know how much she'll be able to tell Steph, or if she'll be able to tell her anything at all - but on a night like tonight, some company is better than laying alone in her room as she tries to remember that it isn't real.]
[As they walk past the bedroom door, Steph grabs a hoodie, accidentally disturbing Mike, who lets out an indignant meow and decides to follow them into the living room, to see what the humans are up to.]
It's what I'm here for.
[She presses a kiss to Ahiru's hair, tangled or otherwise, then moves to turn a lamp and one of the small heaters on. It's not cold-cold, but it gets chilly enough at night that she figures it can't hurt.]
Pretty sure he wants to punch me on instinct anyway.
[Can she argue with that?
It's a good point, though, the one she's making, so he reluctantly releases his hold on her save for his grip on one of her hands and gestures for her to lead the way elsewhere.
[She's not actually so sure about that, but she doesn't really want to think about that all too much right now.
So she uses her free hand to scoop up Mike - she's not allowed to ruin the flowers - before leading Saul into their bedroom and closing the door. Now she can kiss him without worrying about either of the kids.]
[Her tone is a little wry, but still genuine, and once the light and heater are on, she joins Ahiru on the couch, sitting close enough that she's easily in reach, but not so close as to crowd her.
Mike is less concerned with that sort of thing, and simply hops up into Steph's lap, having decided that her legs have to be kneaded for a little while.]
I'm good, but I can wait if you wanna make something for yourself.
[She stops to take a moment to honestly think that through. Should she tell her? Can she build up enough nerve? While she doesn't know the answer to the first question, she suspects the second might be no. She frowns. Maybe something else that's been weighing on her mind.]
[She looks up towards Steph when she sees the girl turn to face her, but quickly looks back down before she begins to speak. It takes her a moment to figure out exactly what to say - she's not used to opening herself up like this, but she feels like she might burst with everything going on lately.
When she speaks, her voice sounds curious, not betraying the emotion behind the question.]
So if you were, like... If you were sent to another world before this one and met somebody there and got really close to him, and then that same person showed up in this one but didn't remember you or that place, would you tell him?
[That's not quite what she was expecting, but it isn't entirely out of left field, either. While she's not familiar with the exact same circumstances, there have been times when someone's left Exsilium, and returned without memories, like Peter, even if they were from different universes.
She's quiet for a moment, weighing up her answer.]
I think I would. [For all Ahiru keeps the casual tone, Steph figures she's asking because it's something that's come up, so she's careful about her words.] I'd spend too much time worried about letting it slip, and 'cause I'd want to know, if I was in there position. You just have to make sure they know you don't expect anything of them.
